How CPAT works in California
California is a one-provider state: the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC), run by the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC), is the exclusive statewide CPAT provider, and most California departments require FCTC's CPAT card when you apply (FCTC). A CPAT from another state usually won't substitute.
- Fee: $160 per attempt, including two orientations within eight weeks of your test date. Timed practice runs are $30 each (FCTC fees).
- Retakes: you pay the full fee each attempt.
- Can't afford it? The California Fire Foundation pays FCTC CPAT and written-test fees for candidates with financial hardship.
